Sports Medicine Q & A

What is sports medicine?

Sports medicine is an orthopedic subspecialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries that occur during sports or physical activities. The goal of sports medicine treatment is to heal the injury and restore normal function so you can return to the activities you love as quickly and safely as possible.

As an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Weiss works with a wide range of patients, from children in Little League to high school, college, and professional athletes. He also has a lot of experience working with children and specializes in pediatric orthopedics.

What problems does a sports medicine specialist treat?

If you play a sport or enjoy recreational activities like skiing, dancing, or weightlifting, you may be at a higher risk for sports injuries. Because athletes use their bodies more frequently, they’re more susceptible to many orthopedic injuries.

Dr. Weiss diagnoses and treats many common sports injuries, including:

  • Fractures
  • Stress fractures
  • Shin splints
  • Sprains and strains
  • Compartment syndrome
  • Tendon and ligament tears
  • Muscle contusions (bruises)
  • Meniscus tears
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears

It may be tempting to continue playing despite a sports injury, but this often leads to further damage. You should call Andrew B. Weiss, MD, at the first sign of a sports injury, such as pain, swelling, or a limited range of motion.

What are common sports medicine treatments?

Dr. Weiss provides surgical and nonsurgical treatments for sports injuries. He always begins by exploring the most conservative treatments, which typically include activity modification and physical therapy.

Depending on the type and severity of your injury, Dr. Weiss may also prescribe an orthotic device, such as an Ossur® brace, or a Bauerfeind® athletic brace or support. To relieve pain and reduce swelling, Dr. Weiss may prescribe medication or administer a steroid injection.

If conservative treatments don’t resolve your problem, Dr. Weiss may consider regenerative medicine treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or stem cell therapy to speed up your natural healing process. He may also use an imaging technique like ultrasound to guide the injection to the precise area of injury or damage.

Severe injuries, like a completely severed tendon or ligament, may require surgery. Dr. Weiss uses advanced techniques, like minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, whenever appropriate. In some cases, open surgery may be safer or more effective.
