Regenerative medicine techniques like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy accelerate your body’s natural healing process and may reduce or eliminate the need for surgery. Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Andrew B. Weiss, MD, offers PRP and stem cell therapy at his practice in Beverly Hills, California. Platelets are naturally occurring components in your blood that play an important role in healing injuries and wounds. In addition to forming blood clots, platelets have hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are responsible for critical aspects of healing like cellular regeneration and soft tissue repair.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a sample of your own blood that contains a high concentration of platelets. Dr. Weiss and his team use the patented Harvest® PRP® procedure to process your blood and separate the platelets from other components, like red blood cells. The result is PRP with about 4-6 times more growth factors than normal blood.
You can think of stem cells as the raw materials of your body. These cells have the unique ability to either create more stem cells or develop into specialized cells (differentiation), such as bone, cartilage, or muscle.
Stem cells can either come from your own tissues, such as bone marrow or fat (adipose), or they may come from donor tissue that gets processed in a lab. Both types help to repair or regenerate damaged or diseased organs and tissues in your body.
PRP and stem cell injections are both regenerative medicine techniques that Dr. Weiss uses to speed up the healing process, relieve pain, and restore normal functioning. He may recommend one or both of these treatments for a variety of orthopedic conditions, including:
He may also use PRP or stem cell therapy to help tissues heal after a surgical procedure, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in the knee.
First, Dr. Weiss carefully reviews your medical history and performs a physical exam to make sure you’re a good candidate for PRP or stem cell therapy.
After he acquires the necessary PRP or stem cells, Dr. Weiss may prepare the injection site with a numbing cream. He may also use an imaging technique like ultrasound to guide the injection to the precise area of injury or damage.
Because PRP and stem cells encourage natural tissue healing, results take time. Typically, patients notice the gradual improvement that begins several weeks after their injection and continues for about six months.
